— December 17, 2025 — Art & Design
Office in Hashima is a new office building completed in 2025 in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The project was commissioned as a headquarters for a company engaged in civil engineering and real estate and occupies a 302 square meter site amid rice fields. The building is distinguished by a sculptural roof that rises sharply toward the east while its eaves descend close to the ground. The roofline includes a gentle undulation in its geometry, and exterior materials include glass, metal, and wood. Large openings on the south side beneath the low eaves are positioned to allow daylight into interior spaces while framing views of the surrounding landscape.

The interior organization places an entrance and meeting areas beneath the raised roof, connecting directly with exterior courtyards and verandas sited beneath the roof edge. Transitional zones between inside and outside incorporate planted greenery and stone, creating continuity with the rural setting even when indoors. Large openings and low eaves balance sunlight control with visual access to gardens and fields. The layout accommodates everyday work functions alongside informal break areas, drawing natural light deep into the plan and encouraging engagement with seasonal changes in the environment.
