Kavalan Debuts Mizunara Oak Single Cask Strength

Kavalan, the Taiwanese whisky distillery known for its innovative maturation techniques, has released a limited-edition Mizunara Oak Single Cask Strength collection in collaboration with Japanese contemporary artist Takahide Komatsu. This range features two cask-strength expressions—one made from unpeated malt and the other from peated malt. Each showcases specially commissioned artwork depicting 12 butterfly species native to Taiwan.

Mizunara oak, which grows in northern Japan and often takes over a century to mature before it can be fashioned into casks, is notoriously difficult to work with due to its porous grain, making these casks exceptionally rare. When combined with Taiwan’s warm, humid climate, the spirit develops distinctive notes of sandalwood, incense, coconut, and tropical fruits that differentiate it from whiskies matured in other oak types. The unpeated version presents aromas of vanilla, fresh coconut, sandalwood, light incense, pineapple, mango, honey, and cinnamon, with a palate of creamy toffee, soft oak, hawthorn, dark chocolate, caramel, and citrus peel.
