Sony Electronics is expanding modular large-format cinema cameras with the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System, allowing filmmakers to capture 65mm footage using their existing VENICE 2 equipment. The interchangeable configuration introduces a larger imaging format without requiring a completely separate camera platform, offering greater flexibility for professional productions.
The system features a sensor approximately 2.2 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor, enhancing visual depth and subject separation. Filmmakers can detach the camera head for handheld filming or confined locations, or attach it directly for studio work. Existing VENICE 2 recording capabilities and colour processing remain available. The system is expected in early 2027, priced at $80,000 USD.
For Sony, the release creates additional upgrade opportunities within its professional camera lineup. Production teams can access expanded filming capabilities while retaining familiar equipment and workflows, potentially simplifying equipment investments.
