Modern Victorian fashion is revived through the presentation of Yohji Yamamoto's Fall/Winter 2019 capsule in Paris. Of course, the Japanese designer had some tricks up his sleeves. While drawing form and inspiration from the refined tailoring and silhouettes of the 19th-century period, he was also inserting subtle grunge-inspired elements from the 90s.
The color palette is essentially predominantly black and the modern Victorian fashion ensembles enjoy creative embellishments that are created with impeccable, detail-oriented craftsmanship. Yamamoto's Fall/Winter 2019 uses the syllabic writing system Kana and the logographic writing system Kanji to instill the contemporary collection with a sense of cultural value. The scripts are "repurposed [...] into decorative patterns" with intentionally contrasting tonal qualities that significantly and "dynamically undercutting the seriousness of the all-black layers."
