Interlocking Mobile Benches

'Brothers in Benches' is a Series of Benches Placed in Johannesburg

'Brothers in Benches' is a series of six completely interchangeable mobile benches constructed out of reclaimed wooden pallets. South African artist R1 put together the benches as part of a broader effort to add vibrancy to public spaces while also envisioning innovative solutions that would make a positive contribution to the community. The benches are part of a residence program in the Maboneng precinct of downtown Johannesburg.

The mobile benches are designed to interlock with each other to form one singular compound structure. Their pallets are fitted with greenery to add an earthiness to public space.

The Brothers in Benches pieces were placed around the streets of Johannesburg at different locations, inviting public participation and egagement.
