Michael Jantzen’s Solar and Gravity Powered Art and Science Pavilion concept integrates 16 long steel arms with solar capture and gravity-driven energy conversion to create a dynamic public structure. At the center of the installation, a solar array at the top of a tower powers 16 winches that raise the steel arms upward, storing potential energy. When the arms descend under gravity, they drive generators that send electricity to the pavilion or local grid, turning vertical movement into usable power without relying on batteries or other hidden components.
The pavilion includes an umbrella-shaped roof with a large floor area suitable for exhibitions, performances, or educational events. Cables connect the arms to winches and generators below the floor, making the mechanical core visible as part of the structure. Visitors can observe the cables and winches in action, tracking changes in the positions of the arms as the sculpture stores and releases energy.
