Garmin is opening its watch audio hardware to outside developers with Connect IQ 9.3, allowing apps on supported smartwatches to record sound and play it back through the built-in mic and speaker. Earlier, those parts were mostly reserved for Garmin software, giving third-party app makers a new way to build voice and audio functions on the watch.
The change reaches selected models such as the Fenix 8 and Forerunner 970, bringing audio hardware already used by features like OK Garmin voice controls into the wider app ecosystem. That opens room for spoken-note capture, alerts and other sound-based tools without a new watch.
Mic and speaker access through Connect IQ 9.3 widens Garmin's software platform because developers can add richer watch apps to hardware users already own. Turning built-in audio into a third-party feature also makes supported models more useful between hardware cycles.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Voice-first Wearables
- Smartwatch apps with microphone access create space for hands-free notes, commands, coaching, and accessibility features that extend device utility beyond fitness tracking.
- Hardware Unlocking
- Previously restricted sensors and components become new software surfaces when platform owners expose them to developers, increasing product value without new device purchases.
- On-wrist Audio Apps
- Built-in speakers and microphones enable lightweight audio experiences such as alerts, playback, translation, and quick capture directly from the wrist.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Wearable Technology
- Developer access to embedded audio systems broadens smartwatch ecosystems and strengthens recurring engagement across existing premium devices.
- Fitness Software
- Audio-enabled watch apps support real-time coaching, workout feedback, and spoken logging that make training tools more immediate and personalized.
- Digital Health
- Mic-based wearable features can support symptom journaling, voice diaries, medication reminders, and accessible health interactions on everyday devices.
