Pneumatic Desk Toys

The MetMo Piston is a Handheld Pneumatic Fidget Device

The MetMo Piston is a precision-machined handheld object that demonstrates the principles of pneumatics through a compact mechanical design. Created by Sean Sykes and James Whitfield, the device uses a piston pin and cylinder block machined to extremely tight tolerances, allowing trapped air inside a sealed chamber to generate resistance and automatically return the piston without springs or magnets. Crafted from solid HTB1 brass, the mechanism recreates pneumatic compression in a pocket-sized format while highlighting the engineering behind compressed-air systems.

The knurled housing also enables the piston to rotate on a thin cushion of air, creating a low-friction spinning action inspired by aerodynamic bearing technology. A pressure release valve allows users to adjust the piston's rebound speed and resistance, while the silent mechanism makes it suitable for use in shared workspaces. Available in solid brass and stainless steel versions.
