Tokyo-based designer Kenji Abe has created MANTLE, a series of bronze dumbbells produced under the ifuki brand in Takaoka City, Japan. The weights combine sandblasted bronze surfaces with mirror-polished sections across a sculptural cast form developed to remain visible within domestic interiors rather than stored away after use. Abe designed the dumbbells after repeatedly hiding his own exercise equipment when guests visited, leading to a form intended to function equally as a display object and fitness tool. The shape references the armadillo through segmented contours and balanced proportions that allow the dumbbells to stand upright on their own.

Each dumbbell incorporates a 45-degree angled grip developed for easier pickup from multiple positions, while the balanced geometry also allows the weights to be worn around wrists or feet during different exercises. The bronze material develops surface patina over time, with contrasting matte and reflective finishes changing through use and handling.
