Dynamic Wall Lighting Systems

The Maap is a Wall-Mounted Lighting System

Maap is a wall-mounted lighting system designed with a steel framework and a crumpled Tyvek diffuser that can be shaped and reshaped by its owner. Created by French designer Erwan Bouroullec for Flos, the fixture uses magnetic attachment points to secure the lightweight, tear-resistant material while allowing it to be repositioned into different forms over time. The Tyvek envelope replaced paper during development to provide greater durability while retaining a soft, folded appearance. Each installation develops its own contours and composition, making every arrangement distinct while relying on the same underlying structural framework.

The lighting system is offered in three sizes, with the largest version measuring just over 10 feet wide. Its oversized diffuser spreads illumination across the wall to create ambient lighting rather than concentrating brightness at a single point. Magnetic "Dots" allow the diffuser to be removed and configured repeatedly without altering the supporting structure. Released on July 21, the design is available through Flos flagship stores, the company's website, and Design Within Reach retail locations and online store.
