The floor line marking tape in hospitals that direct visitors to different sectors of the building has been adopted in various ways in different settings to better guide guests in unfamiliar territories; the light transmissive carpets could be the next step in such an enterprise. It essentially boasts embedded LEDs that form words, arrows and more to help with direction.
Conceived by Philips in collaboration with flooring company Desso, the light transmissive carpets could easily be more than just signage. It could also signal yet another space for advertisements. Ad agencies have been very creative with stairs, after all. Although the product is still in development, it is said to be launched in Europe, Middle East and Africa sometime next year.
