Bond-Creating Community Networks

Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership is Holistic

Based in New Haven, Connecticut, LEAP, which stands for Leadership, Education and Athletics in Partnership, is an organization that was founded by 1993 Echoing Green Fellow Matthew Klein. The program itself, which targets high-poverty areas in the local community, centers on reading, homework help, technology education and civic involvement. It's done through a mentorship program in which college students and high school students, together, work with children who are usually between the ages of eight and ten.

In this way, Klein's vision, as Executive Director of the Blue Ridge Foundation New York as well, attempts to be holistic and somewhat intensive as part of the program involves the college students moving into apartments in the neighborhoods of the children they work with.
