Innovative Steel Laneway Houses

Weiss Architecture & Urbanism Limited Presents a Striking Project

Weiss Architecture & Urbanism Limited designed the stunning, innovative, and incredibly practical Pocket Laneway House. For the aesthetic of the residence, the architects drew inspiration from retro-futuristic influences like the Apollo-era lunar lander.

Situated in Toronto, this compact structure features a unique, elevated form clad in corrugated galvalume. The structure is supported by a V-shaped steel column on helical piers. Warm cedar cladding and vibrant folk art-inspired accents soften its modern edge. This design not only minimizes ground contact to protect a mature maple tree but also creates a visually dynamic, treehouse-like appearance. The Pocket Laneway House serves as a secondary dwelling on the same lot as the owners' primary home and offers flexibility for future use as a caregiver’s residence.
