Kage No Otomodachi Projects Illustrated Characters onto the Ground

Kage no Otomodachi is a children's umbrella created by studio torinoko. The name translates to "Shadow Friends" and refers to the illustrated shadow figures that appear when the umbrella is used in direct sunlight. Cutout graphics integrated into the canopy cast character-shaped shadows onto the ground, creating the appearance of a companion walking alongside the user. The concept combines sun protection with interactive shadow play through a single everyday object.

The umbrella is intended for outdoor use during sunny conditions, with the projected figures appearing only when strong sunlight passes through the canopy. A turquoise-blue finish was selected for visibility, while reflective details improve recognition during rainy weather and evening use. Rather than adding graphics to the surface of the umbrella itself, the design places the visual experience on the pavement below through the projected shadows.
