Jony Ive and Marc Newson Design a Special Ring for (RED)
Apple design chief Jony Ive designed a special ring in collaboration with the talents of industrial designer Marc Newson -- the special jewelry piece is made specifically for '(RED) by Diamond Foundry. It made its debut at Sotheby's, an auction house, where it was announced that the $250,000 ring will help with raise funds to assist eight African countries in eliminating HIV/AIDS. The ring's design draws inspiration from the design of a MacBook, as Ive played a role in designing the Apple product -- the MacBook is constructed from a solid chunk of aluminum and the ring is made from a diamond block.
Sotheby's made it clear that the interior part of the ring is set to be cut and smoothed out through the process of a thick water jet in conjunction with a laser beam. The entire ring will result in having “between 2000-3000 facets which has never been seen before on a single piece.”
