Jane Long Re-Lives the Past with Her Latest Series

Australian photographer Jane Long breathes new life into old photographs with her project 'Dancing with Costică.'

Long re-purposed a set of black-and-white images by Romanian photographer Costică Acsints, adding color and digitally inserting them into an entirely new, vibrant background. The somber, tense-looking subjects of the original images look more than a little out of place in Long's alternate universe; however, the whimsical compositions weave together an intriguing narrative of past and present.

The project began almost accidentally, with Long merely looking for a way to improve her retouching skills. However, after looking at the photos, Long admits that she became fascinated with the subjects. Though she will never know the reality behind the individuals, Long wanted to give them a story of her own.
