Queensland-based artist Irene Hwang channels iconic pop cultural casts in the form of adorable Russian nesting dolls. The one-of-a-kind characters are all hand painted and filled with attitude. Hwang covers an array of pop cultural iconography with these dolls from movies to television shows to artists and musical groups. Some examples of the nesting doll families are: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Big Bang Theory, Reno 911!, The Avengers, Clockwork Orange and the band Kiss.
The sets include the most important characters; for example, the set from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou features the crew on Steve Zissou’s research vessel Belafonte including: Steve, Pelé dos Santos, Klaus Daimler, Vladimir Wolodarsky and Vikram Ray.
Irene Hwang’s dolls are all made to order and cost between $90 to $200 US depending the size of the set.
