Nutrition From Water is expanding its hybrid dairy blends with Portuguese ingredient supplier Prolacto, developing formulations that combine water-derived proteins and fiber with dairy for food companies. Aimed at nutrition manufacturers in the Iberian Peninsula and select international customers, the project gives formulators a way to add protein and fiber while staying within familiar dairy formats.
One Marine Whey ingredient, MW50, replaces sodium caseinate and delivers 50% protein. The line is priced at about a third of conventional whey. That gives manufacturers a lower-cost route into dairy drinks or performance nutrition while reducing exposure to whey supply strain.
A line priced at roughly a third of whey turns hybrid dairy from a climate story into a sourcing tool for Iberian ingredient buyers. Using Prolacto's dairy blending base also broadens where microalgae proteins fit, because brands can work them into existing recipes instead of building around a fully dairy-free formula.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Hybrid Dairy Formulations
- Blended algae-dairy ingredients create room for familiar nutrition products with improved protein, fiber, cost, and supply resilience.
- Microalgae Protein Integration
- Water-derived proteins are moving into mainstream dairy formats, signaling new ingredient platforms beyond fully plant-based or animal-based positioning.
- Cost-efficient Performance Nutrition
- Lower-priced alternatives to conventional whey open space for value-focused sports nutrition, functional beverages, and fortified dairy products.
Sectors Adopting This
- Dairy Ingredients
- Ingredient suppliers can expand conventional dairy systems with algae-derived components that support affordability and differentiated nutrition profiles.
- Functional Beverages
- Protein and fiber-enhanced dairy drinks gain new formulation flexibility through hybrid inputs that fit existing manufacturing and flavor expectations.
- Sports Nutrition
- Performance nutrition brands benefit from hybrid protein sources that reduce whey dependency while preserving recognizable dairy-based product formats.
