Israeli designer Itay Ohaly recently debuted a line of contemporary vases that reveal hidden designs when scratched. While most people try to avoid scratching their home furnishings, this designer encourages consumers to see what lays beneath the surface of his beautiful containers.
The scratchable vases are part of a continuation of Ohaly's 'Colored Memories' installation. Ohaly came up with the idea for the unusual vases after remembering the etchings he use to do as a child. These crafts involved scratching off a dark coating to reveal different colors underneath the surface of the paper. Ohaly recreated this effect by covering each of his vases in several layers of paint and oil. When consumers begin scratching the surface of a vase, the black paint gives way to reveal a series of hidden designs underneath.
The beautiful vases manage to combine a popular childhood pastime with modern home decor.
