Taishi Sugiura Designs the Hayashi Cabinet with Unique Paneling
The Hayashi Cabinet is a storage unit that integrates natural tree limbs into its functional design, using real forest branches as the doors that cover its compartments. Each branch is selected and treated to retain its organic form and texture while being stabilised for long-term use.
The cabinet body is constructed from precision-finished hardwood panels with concealed hinges that allow the branch doors to swing open smoothly without interfering with their irregular forms. Handles are carved into the natural contours of the branches rather than added separately, emphasising continuity between the organic elements and the engineered frame. Inside the cabinet, adjustable shelving supports varied storage needs while maintaining clean, unobstructed surfaces. The base elevates the piece slightly from the floor on a simple plinth to give visual prominence to the branch doors.
