Callipyge Genetics is advancing genetically certified beef through its TENET system, which identifies cattle carrying naturally inherited traits associated with exceptional tenderness. Rather than relying on traditional grading methods focused on fat and marbling, the technology uses DNA markers to assess tenderness potential early in an animal's life. This allows producers to select cattle based on a specific meat quality characteristic.
The testing process requires a small blood or tissue sample, with certification costing $26 per animal. According to the company, selective breeding could help herds achieve TENET-level tenderness within two generations. The approach may also reduce dependence on extended feeding periods.
Through its Certified TENET Beef initiative, Callipyge Genetics aims to connect qualifying cattle with premium markets. The company estimates certification could generate $600 to $1,000 in additional value per animal, potentially improving producer profitability.

Why This Trend Is Growing
- Dna-based Meat Grading
- Genomic verification creates premium differentiation beyond visual marbling standards, giving producers a data-backed pathway to certify eating quality before processing.
- Trait-specific Livestock Breeding
- Selective genetics tied to measurable tenderness traits can shorten quality improvement cycles and reshape how herds are optimized for consumer experience.
- Premium Protein Certification
- Certified quality attributes introduce new value tiers in beef markets, where traceable biological markers support higher margins and stronger buyer confidence.
Industries Being Reshaped
- Beef Production
- Cattle operations can gain new profitability models through early-life genetic screening that identifies animals with higher-value tenderness potential.
- Agricultural Biotechnology
- DNA marker platforms expand the role of biotech in food production by turning inherited animal traits into certifiable commercial assets.
- Food Retail
- Retailers and specialty meat brands benefit from scientifically verified tenderness claims that differentiate premium beef offerings in competitive protein aisles.
