Fukushima United Stadium is announced as Japan’s first all-timber football venue, designed by VUILD to embody renewal, community, and sustainable practice. Inspired by the Shikinen Sengu ritual of shrine rebuilding, the project uses locally sourced laminated wood and modular construction methods that allow for full disassembly and recycling. The circular form is composed of four interconnected volumes that create a human-scale presence while framing entrances and pathways for spectators.
The design prioritizes participation as much as performance. Local residents and club members will take part in workshops and stadium assembly, reinforcing its role as a shared civic achievement. Hyperbolic-paraboloid shells provide sweeping six-meter cantilevers, while a triangular roof recalls traditional thatched architecture. Systems for seasonal snow cooling, passive ventilation, and rainwater harvesting align the Fukushima United stadium with ecological responsibility, transforming it into a landmark of resilience and forward-looking design.
