The City of York Council, in collaboration with 55 city-wide partners, has initiated a program titled 'For Your Convenience.' This initiative is designed to enhance the availability of resting and sanitary facilities for visitors and residents with specific physical needs.
'For Your Convenience' invites participating establishments to display standardized decals on their premises, signaling that individuals with disabilities, chronic health conditions, or age-related frailty are welcome to use their seating or restrooms without any requirement to be a paying customer. The visual identifiers provide specific details regarding the available amenities, such as the presence of step-free entry, the design of chairs, and the accessibility features of toilets.
The program was developed following an evaluation of a prior, similar project and incorporated feedback from groups representing individuals with disabilities and older adults. The operational costs for the signage are supported by corporate sponsorships.
