The now world-renowned Ellen DeGeneres selfie taken at the Oscars did more than just snap a moment of fame, it broke one of the biggest sites on the net.

During the Oscars, host Ellen DeGeneres decided to take one of the biggest pop culture spectacles of the past few years and have some fun with it. The talk show host strode through the aisles, gathering up famous celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Bradd Pitt, Julia Roberts and Bradley Cooper and took a snapshot. The idea is simple enough but what happened after that is the big thing.

Ellen then went to Twitter to send the image out to see how many retweets it could get. The image blew the former image of Obama on his re-election day out of the water. To put it in context Obama, got 778,000 retweets and the Ellen DeGeneres selfie got over 2 million, essentially breaking the platform.
