Bamboo Storm Structures

This Hardy School by Eleena Jamil is Built to Bamboozle Storms

This awesome storm-resistant school made almost entirely out of bamboo was designed by Eleena Jamil and went on to become the winning entry in the MyShelter Foundation's design competition.

The Phillipines is used to the regular interference of powerful tropical storms, so a large criteria of the design competition was that all submitted designs had to incorporate design features that would allow them to be easily repaired in the event of damage from such an occurrence. To this end, Eleena Jamil's bamboo school uses a straight-forward and easily replicated design from a material that grows in abundance throughout the Phillipines and is easily accessed.

Bamboo-based Construction
There is a trend towards using bamboo as a primary construction material due to its abundance and sustainability, and this presents opportunities for disruptive innovation in building design and construction methods.
Storm-resistant Architecture
Given the increasing frequency and intensity of tropical storms around the world, there is a growing trend towards designing buildings that are capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions, providing opportunities for innovation in building materials and design features.
Disaster-resilient Infrastructure
As the impacts of climate change continue to worsen, there is a growing trend towards investing in disaster-resilient infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of natural disasters, presenting opportunities for innovation in engineering, design, and construction practices.
