In an attempt to increase security in the country, Azerbaijan will begin issuing a new generation of electronic identity cards to surpass the current offerings. Described as the next generation from the point of view of security, these new electronic identity cards feature a distinct chip that combines information regarding citizen registration, place of residence, marital status, as well as biometric photos and indicators specific to the holder of the identity card.
The implementation of these new electronic identity cards showcases a commitment to increased security Azerbaijan has. By including biometric identification governments can easily identify a person, whether it be to locate a wanted or missing person, or simply to verify identity. Furthermore, the application of the cards significantly lowers the risk of forgery as it must be tied to a specific biometric identity.
