Forest-Fostering Robots

This Dual-Arm Robot is Helping Fight Deforestation In the Amazon

ABB Robotics, a company that has distinguished itself with a vast array of robots and automated technologies, is putting its expertise into play into the cause of helping to fight deforestation in the Amazon rainforest by way of a dual-arm robot that is capable of carrying out substantial gardening projects.

The 'YuMi' is a dual-arm robot that is built around a lightweight skeleton. This collaborative robot is being put into play in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest and given the task of carrying out seed-planting. How it works is that the dual-arm robot digs a hole before placing a seed before covering up the void, with the robot taking only a dozen seconds per seed container and capable of planting 640 crates per session. Human volunteers from the Junglekeepers organization then take the crate for planting.

Ultimately, the ability of this dual-arm robot to carry out tasks that are then completed by human volunteers speaks to the efficacy of collaborative robotics in sustainability applications.
