LifeNet Health Completed Unique Drone Kidney Transport

LifeNet Health, in collaboration with NASA Langley Research Center and the United Network for Organ Sharing, has successfully completed the First-of-Its-Kind Drone Kidney Transport study. This venture involved the drone transport of human kidneys beyond visual line of sight. The June 5 flights represented a significant step toward evaluating the viability of unmanned aerial vehicles for organ delivery in transplantation logistics.

The kidneys were biopsied and placed on preservation pumps both before and after the approximately 15-minute flights, with temperature, pressure, and altitude monitored throughout. Preliminary findings from the research indicated no evidence of negative effects on the organs from the transportation process. The pioneering study utilized kidneys donated for research by a donor family after it was determined they were not suitable for transplant.
