Plant-Based Timber Cabins

Moontower Design Build Has Created the Cross Cabin in Austin

Texas-based design firm Moontower Design Build has created the Cross Cabin, which is a plant-based cabin in Austin. It is comprised of cross-laminated timber elements that are paired with a facade clad of cork. The dwelling unit rests on top of a sloped yard that overlooks the horizon through a tree canopy. The cabin was completed last year and was a direct response to the AIA Architecture & Design Materials Pledge to bring attention to design on the holistic effects of structures.

The co-founder of the studio Greg Esparza speaks to Dezeen about the design, noting "These natural materials like wood and cork are repeatedly presented throughout the home in ways that are intended to provoke an unconventional sensory engagement with building materials." The cabin is made up of an elevated timber box "blanketed with plant-based insulation like cork, hemp and wood fiber."
