Barcelona recently launched an initiative that aims to counteract loneliness among senior citizens. As in many other cities, Barcelona's senior citizens are increasingly isolated. This initiative aims to use video chat solutions as a way to help the elderly stay connected.
The Spanish city is providing more than 200 of its senior citizens with tablets, apps and Internet connections in order to keep people connected. Each tablet comes pre-loaded with a Skype-style video chat service, a digital diary, a photo sharing app and a voice messaging system. Seniors can then use the video chat feature on the tablets to connect with friends family and caregivers. The technology is designed to facilitate social contact and ultimately counteract loneliness.
The project demonstrates that live video chat solutions can be used for unorthodox solutions such as improving the mental health of isolated demographics.
