Raleigh-based architecture firm In Situ Studio builds a sleek contemporary visitor center for the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA). The 1,158-square-foot building features a darkened steel exterior and a cantilevered roof that visually defines itself by virtue of an irregularly shaped hoop cut-out.
Situated near a brick smokestack and other amenities, the architects ensured that the contemporary visitor center establishes important visual connections with the park's landmarks. The aluminum cut-out on the roof helps with that as it "reframes an image of the smokestack upon arrival at the patio." The simple and low-profile design allows the building to further blend into its environment while the inconspicuous material use adds a sense of unobtrusive elegance.
