Connected School Bus Safety

First Student Uses HALO to Catch Bus Risks Before They Escalate

First Student uses its 'HALO' connected transportation platform across North America to give drivers and transportation teams earlier warnings about school bus risks. The system aggregates live vehicle data, safety records, and operating metrics into a single view, so teams serving students can spot trouble sooner and coach drivers more precisely.

HALO runs on more than 48,000 vehicles in First Student's fleet and links those risk signals to maintenance and coaching work. In a four-week pilot, forward-collision risk fell 63%. Across six locations, rolling stops dropped 54%, showing how the platform turns data review into day-to-day driving changes.

HALO's use in the U.S. and Canada turns connected safety into an operating layer instead of a standalone report. Integrating live risk detection into coaching and maintenance gives large student transportation fleets a clearer way to manage driver support at scale.
