Berg has created a smart washing machine called Cloudwash that can alert the user if detergent is running low. Cloudwash is a model washing machine that aims to connect home electrical appliances through the World Wide Web. The smart laundry machine allows people to buy detergent and time wash loads using only a smartphone app. The designers of Cloudwash took a Zanussi washing machine and input an Arduino Mega to communicate and interchange serial data.
The network was built using MySQL and Node.js and is used as a virtual database of each machine's programmed state, while the connected iOS device will receive updated, initiated events with notifications. Another observation that Berg noticed was that people only use two or three pre-programmed wash cycles out of the multiple cycles; the result: Berg devised a system that only has three personalized options that can be altered via a smartphone app: Notify, Conditioner and Detergent.
