Those unpleasant discoveries under desks and on sidewalks are delightfully appropriated into the design of chewing gum hooks. Called Sugarfree, this playful coatrack comprises a panel of pale oak wood that's been equipped with three unusual knobs, made to resemble discarded pieces of bubble gum. It's as if somebody pulled each one out of his mouth and applied it directly to the lovely wood grain backing.
Mr. Simon's design is childlike and quirky, but it's certainly functional too. Using bits of pastel-colored clay to emulate the look of masticated mints, the designer has molded irregular shapes that help to keep suspended items stuck to these pegs. Although these chewing gum hooks are small, they're effective to hold purse straps, scarves, hats, jewelry, clothing and light jackets.
