Mitchells & Butlers, the UK’s leading restaurant and pub company, teamed up with The Chatty Cafe Scheme—the UK's leading non‑profit social enterprise tackling loneliness and social isolation—to launch weekly hosted Chatter & Natter sessions across more than 60 sites in England and Wales. With intentionality and a simple, welcoming space created to sip coffee or tea, engage in conversation and make connections, this initiative invites locals to drop by regularly and feel like they are part of something bigger.
As part of this community-centered, loneliness-fighting initiative, there's a goal to recruit a total of 240 volunteer hosts who will welcome guests and help to start conversations across all participating locations, so that no one has to feel uncomfortable or awkward arriving on their own.
What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Hosted Social Dining
- Structured conversation formats turn low-pressure café and pub visits into recurring social rituals that reduce loneliness while increasing venue relevance beyond traditional dining occasions.
- Loneliness-focused Hospitality
- Community-centered hospitality blends foodservice, wellbeing, and local belonging, creating differentiated guest experiences around emotional connection rather than purely transactional consumption.
- Volunteer-led Community Hubs
- Trained local hosts bring scalable human warmth to physical venues, making social inclusion programs more approachable, repeatable, and operationally lightweight for multi-site operators.
Sectors Adopting This
- Restaurants and Pubs
- Underused dayparts in hospitality venues become valuable community infrastructure when casual dining spaces are repositioned as welcoming places for conversation and connection.
- Nonprofit Services
- Partnerships between social enterprises and commercial operators expand the reach of loneliness interventions through trusted local destinations and shared operational resources.
- Mental Wellness
- Preventative wellbeing models increasingly include everyday social contact, positioning informal community gatherings as accessible complements to clinical and digital mental health support.
