Since Super Mario was put together in video game form through pixels, the pixelated 3D display was a conceptually simple matter of putting the right colored can labels. Of course, the execution must have been very time consuming to put together.

I would totally be one of those jerks who would end up knocking over the entire display trying to get one of the red labelled cans in the background. I guess it's a good thing that the 3D canned food display is behind a velvet rope.
