The BMW i8 coupe is the automotive company's lead vehicle in its charge to the hybrid market. Debuting at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the i8 coupe is the refreshing update to the i8 plug-in-hybrid already offered by the company. Some of the updates to the vehicle include an updated 11.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack, optional 20-inch wheels, new color schemes and a new hardtop design. BMW intends to use this model to change the perspective on its hybrid vehicles and expects to have half a million electrified vehicles on the road by the end of 2019.
In terms of performance results, the BMW i8 coupe stands out as an impressive offering. The vehicle is all wheel drive as the internal combustion engine powers the rear wheels, and the 34 amp-hour electric motor powers the front. Combining both engines, the i8 is capable of 374 horsepower, and can complete 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds. BMW is also touting the i8's ability to go 18 miles on pure electric power. The i8 may not be a radical change to the hybrid market, but its innovation lies in the pure performance of the vehicle. In many cases, drivers had to decide between a hybrid or performance vehicle, but the BMW i8 coupe beautifully marries the two concepts into an amazing design.
