The unit consists of terracotta pipes stacked on top of one another to achieve a hive-like form, which is then topped with flowing water to start the evaporative cooling process. The unit can effectively keep an area much cooler, while only requiring the pump and fuel/electricity to power the pump. The water is collected in the lower area to be pumped back up again to reduce reliance on a continuous supply of fresh water.
