Modern washing machine appliances are commonplace in urban communities but incompatible for rural ones, which is something the conceptual 'Bamboo Flow' washing machine is designed to change.

The washing machine operates much in the same way as a top-loading version of the original appliance, but makes use of water flow and pressure in rivers instead of requiring electricity. These features make the washing machine perfect for rural communities where electricity access might be limited or nonexistent, and is thus great for developing nations to allow for effective clothes washing with less effort. The unit maintains a sustainable bamboo construction.

The conceptual 'Bamboo Flow' washing machine is the design work of Zhipeng Lu, Youyong Duan, Haoxu Shen and Han Gao of the Dalian Minzu University in China.
