Numaligarh Refinery Commissions a Bamboo Biorefinery

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) recently commissioned a bamboo biorefinery that converts biomass into ethanol and downstream green chemicals, marking a strategic shift beyond conventional fuel refining. The India-based company positioned the facility as a core pillar of its long-term diversification strategy, designed to align with the country’s broader energy transition. The biorefinery launch signaled NRL’s intent to balance traditional fuel production with lower-carbon alternatives.

The new biorefinery processes bamboo feedstock into ethanol while also generating multiple co-products. These include furfural and its derivatives such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), along with biochar and activated carbon that can serve industrial and environmental applications. NRL also indicated plans to derive green hydrogen from biomass residues, further extending the plant’s value chain. Once commercial performance stabilizes, the company aims to replicate this model at additional sites.

Moreover, the project supports India’s goals to decarbonize fuels while creating new revenue streams from chemical by-products.
