DARPA's Fast Lighweight Autonomy program has spearheaded the development of an exceptional autonomous drone that is capable of navigating through very tight and tricky environments at impressive speed without the need for any global positioning systems or indeed outside remote control monitoring.
While there are many autonomous drones out there that are fast and agile, they tend to be small and can't pack too much extra technology. The drones that do pack lots of sensors and payloads tend to be large. The Fast Lightweight Autonomy drones are unique in that regard as they are bidding to find a sweet spot between small size and technological versatility.
These lightweight and reliable autonomous drones could be used in a wide array of applications, from scoping out hazardous environments in the wake of natural disasters to helping military units carry out reconnaissance missions.
