Affordable Electric Pickup Plans

Ford Is Building Its $30,000 Electric Truck with Apple Alumni

Ford assembled a secret skunk works team combining Tesla and Apple alumni with veteran Ford engineers to create an affordable electric pickup, featuring a stripped-back electrical architecture and a modular “assembly tree” production system. The project began in 2022 and was positioned internally as an effort to reach a $30,000 price point for a mainstream EV truck.

The prototype reportedly targets around 300 miles of range and performance comparable to Ford’s Mustang line, while the team removed thousands of feet of copper wiring and reworked traditional assembly processes. Ford framed the initiative as a cultural and manufacturing reset aimed at competing with lower-cost Chinese EV makers, with CEO Jim Farley describing it as a “Model T moment.”

For consumers, the project signals the potential arrival of a more accessible mass-market electric truck that could expand EV adoption and pressure automakers to simplify vehicle architectures and reduce production costs. The effort also reflects a broader industry push toward faster, leaner manufacturing models to stay competitive in the global EV market.
