Birth-Detecting AI-Imaging Cameras

Nikon's Camera Detects When Cows are Ready to Give Birth

Nikon pushes boundaries with its new AI system in the form of the AI-imaging camera that is developed to help farmers better understand when a cow is ready to give birth. It is made to check pregnant cows during busy birthing seasons for a more efficient time. It is comprised of a security-style camera that is backed by an AI system with connectivity to a smartphone app that alerts farmers when a calf is about to give birth.

The AI was training since Fall 2021 and the concept tests took place across four farms in southwestern Japan up to February 2023. The camera detects signs about five hours before labor. Nikon's Kazuhiro Hirano notes, "We want to be able to also detect when a female cow is in heat and other behavioral patterns."
