Creativity-Promoting Playgrounds

This Adventure Playground in New York Promotes Imaginative Play

Governor's Island is set to become the site of New York City's first adventure playground. While the concept is common in places such as Europe, North American cities are only just beginning to experiment with the creativity-boosting playgrounds.

The new adventure playground in New York will provide space for children to play independently, without the rigidity of schedules and fixed play equipment. Unlike a traditional playground, kids will be free to do basically whatever they want. In order to make sure kids are safe, the space will be staffed by play workers who will step in if children are engaging in anything too risky. However, the island is nearly car-free and the park itself is free from any major hazards, making it a safe space for children to let their imagination run wild.

The new park ultimately serves as a reaction to over-parenting and the hyper-monitored lives that many children now lead.
