SABESP launched a large-scale smart water metering program with Vivo and IDEMIA Secure Transactions, deploying 4.4 million connected meters across São Paulo City and São José dos Campos. The 14-year initiative combines Vivo’s connectivity infrastructure with IDEMIA’s secure eSIM IoT technology to modernize water monitoring and distribution.
The system supports hourly consumption data, remote monitoring and faster detection of anomalies and leaks. IDEMIA’s eSIM IoT platform is compliant with the GSMA SGP.32 standard and is designed to provide secure, energy-efficient and resilient connectivity across both dense urban and harder-to-reach areas. The platform also incorporates cryptographic agility intended to support future security requirements.
For consumers, the rollout offers greater visibility into water usage and quicker identification of leaks. The project reflects how connected infrastructure can improve utility efficiency, reduce water losses and strengthen customer engagement through more transparent resource management.
