Explaining to the public how economists measure social mobility, Gregory Clark's social mobility keynote is engaging and a little shocking.

Having done his research by tracking family names across generations, economist Gregory Clark's research shows us that unlike popular opinion, moving between social classes is not easier in this day and age than it was in the past. The social mobility keynote highlights that mobility rates are lower than conventionally estimated, and that inheritance is still the main way people are able to move between social classes.

Clark's research proves that status and social mobility are based off past ancestry and cultural values and that battling inequality is a better idea than aiming for high social mobility.
