Forest for the Trees Showcases Cork Sustainable Furniture

The Forest for the Trees showcases cork furniture with sustainable flair in a solo exhibition by Daniel Michalik. Presented at Hudson Valley’s Available Items gallery, the show presents six new pieces—from the sculptural Cortiça Chaise Longue and Striated Seats to São Miguel and Santarém stools—all crafted from 100 % recycled cork, including wine corks, insulation, and skateboard scraps. The designs harness cork’s buoyancy, fire resistance, and hydrophobic properties, exploring both structural solidity and visual lightness.

Grooves and geometric forms play with gravity, creating floating shelves and gently rocking lounge pieces that invite interaction and memory. Beyond individual works, the exhibition is a meditation on circular material stewardship. Cork harvesting preserves trees, sequesters carbon, and generates no waste, including the dust used as biomass byproduct. Michalik’s work blurs boundaries between furniture and artifact, encouraging viewers to reconsider traditional building materials and celebrate a symbiosis between design, ecology, and cultural continuity
