Clark Bardsley design developed a collection of furniture for New Zealand brand Essenze using wrinkled steel tubes forged into shape by a skilled tube-bending specialist. The furniture is inspired by the natural deformations that occur in day-to-day life, and is refreshing in that its designers aren't afraid to acknowledge imperfection but rather embrace it head-on. While steel can be perfectly bent, it will naturally crease over time, and this feature is incorporated into the collection.
The wrinkled tubes in this Essenze furniture collection celebrate the unique plasticity of steel, and have been liberally used in furniture collections with names like the Wrinkle Table and Tangle Stool.
The aforementioned table features a seemingly never-ending zig-zagging structure that shows off the steel's manipulation on the concave portion of each crest. Meanwhile, the chair features intersecting angled bars below the seat for increased stability and aesthetic value.
