MAST Designs the New Centroparco on a Sand Quarry

Copenhagen-based architecture studio MAST unveils its new plans to develop the Centroparco, which is a park that is detailed with floating buildings and islands. It will take over an abandoned sand quarry along the outskirts of Milan in the middle of the Segrate district. The project aims to bring communities together -- ones that were previously disconnected as a natural retreat. It will have links for pedestrians and bicycles, as well as boat rentals, restaurants, and a spa.

MAST's founding partner Marshall Blecher explains that "A key criteria for the project was to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment. Walkways will weave between existing trees, which are going to be retained and the buildings, which present as small nodes along the walkway, will be constructed off-site to minimise the impact."
Trend Themes
1. Floating Architecture Parks - Developing floating parks as a way of providing communities with natural retreats and creating links for pedestrian and water transportation.
2. Sustainable Building - Minimizing environmental impact by constructing buildings off-site and retaining existing trees when developing natural spaces.
3. Community-based Development - Designing natural spaces that promote community building and connectivity, bringing previously disconnected neighborhoods and individuals together.
Industry Implications
1. Architecture - Integrating sustainability and community-driven initiatives when designing natural spaces and buildings for public use.
2. Tourism and Hospitality - Creating recreational opportunities like boat rentals and spa areas along with restaurants in natural retreat areas.
3. Construction - Developing natural retreats in waterways with the use of floating architecture and sourcing materials that are sustainable for long-term use.
