30 Imposing Indigenous Editorials

From Tribal Androgyny to Aboriginal-Inspired Images:

These imposing indigenous editorials mimic facets of aboriginal culture.

It is no secret that the land of the West was essentially taken from these people, as famously depicted in Pocahontas and modernly reinvented in Avatar. This leads some to raise eyebrows at the fact that organizations so blatantly adopt their traditional wear for fashion magazine needs. The result is widespread superficial knowledge about the indigenous people -- most only know that they wear colorful, feathered headdresses and beautifully primitive dressings.

The debate on whether commercializing their fashion style is disrespectful or an act of tribute and acknowledgement is a testy one, although it is an issue that is never completely addressed in the fashion world.
